Supah Mario - Supah Mario World
Very chill but knockable instrumental album by Supah Mario, an acclaimed Southern producer who has provided beats for the likes of Brick Squad while maintaining a growing fan-base in the instrumental music realm. You gotta love that artwork. S/O to Chuuch.
Gunplay & Isaiah Toothtaker - “FROWNIN”
(Blue Sky Black Death Remix)
MMG standout Gunplay makes yet another random collaborative gem. This time, its with Arizonian emcee Isaiah Toothtaker of experimental hardcore rap crew Machina Muerte on new track “FROWNIN” featuring booming dark electronic production by Blue Sky Black Death. Don Logan brings the reality and floats on the beat as always while Toothtaker hits with some blunt-force punchlines such as “Ride or die, right? Why you acting car sick?” and “A real son of a gun, right? My mother was a cartridge. Wanna shoot the fair one outside? I’m somewhat of a marksman.” Interestingly enough, this is actually the remixed version of the track. It’s not every day you get to hear the remix before the original.
Jowin - “Cosplay Girl Rebloom” (Starring Kana Katana)
Dir. Jowin
The remixed sequel to Jowin’s acclaimed single “Cosplay Girl” gets a proper visual starring the newest cast member of his Weekend Cartunes YouTube channel, cosplayer Kana Katana. Plue Starfox’s buttery-smooth beat and the video’s depiction of a photoshoot/date provides a great backdrop for Jowin’s tale of self-identity and escapism. The Cowboy Bebop-influenced animations during the choruses also add a nice touch. Jowin’s Project: Rebloom EP is out now.
Airospace - Earl Sweatshirt
Shoutout to the homie Ryan for dropping this in my inbox last night. Airospace is an MC hailing from the Washington, DC area. On this track “Earl Sweatshirt,” Airospace goes off like a motivated version of the Odd Future member the song is named after. Needless to say, I enjoyed what I heard.
eMex - The Message
Baltimore MC eMex is back again, this time with a banger of a track in “The Message. Philadelphia producer Paris Artelli laced him with an absolutely great beat and eMex flows over it perfectly. I’m still waiting on a full project from eMex, but these singles he’s dropping off will have to do.
Lord Byron - Cosby (Prod. Doughmars)
Denver native Lord Byron dropped his latest track “Cosby” yesterday. Byron has always come across to me as a heavily lyrical MC (much to my approval) and with “Cosby” he does not disappoint. Maryland producer/MC Doughmars provided a great soundtrack that complements Byron beautifully.
Butch Dawson - Irongrip (Video)
Rapper/Producer Butch Dawson, from the Baltimore collective Lost Leaders 7th Floor Villains (LL7FV) dropped off this visual for his track Irongrip today. Shot locally in Baltimore, the video is a posse cut video, featuring various members of LL7FV and CCL$ members throughout the video. Irongrip also features a guest verse from fellow Baltimore MC Palmtree Tony. Word to making in rain in Pokemon cards, very rare.
Common Enemies - Air Tuff TV (Episode 1)
Baltimore collective Common Enemies recently started up a web series called Air Tuff TV, that they will host on their Vimeo page. These short videos will detail behind-the-scenes footage, life and the antics that go on throughout these artist’s lives. This first episode is the behind the scenes of CE artist Storee’s soon to be released music video.
CRASHprez & Kiazma - Masters & Martyrs
DMV/Madtown representative CRASHprez teamed up with Wisconsin producer Kiazma for this short EP titled Masters & Martyrs. While for me it seems as though CRASH took more of an experimental (in the true sense of the word, not the genre) route, and I didn’t really vibe with it that much, it’s still an interesting project that’s definitely worth a listen. My favorite cut off of the EP has to be “ALLCAPSSERIOUS”
Mack Scott - No Escape (feat. eMex)
Another Baltimore artist I’ve come across during my time here is Common Enemies representative Mack Scott. He dropped No Enemies a few weeks ago and this song absolutely goes in. He recruits fellow Baltimore MC eMex for two brilliantly executed verses. The beat chosen for this track slaps as well, with production by Milo.
