160Or80 - 160Or80
Japanese music collective 160Or80 releases their debut self-titled compilation album featuring their full roster that combines the realms of rap, chillwave, trap and the juke/footwork style. This might be the first time we’ve heard the influence over Japanese rap, and the results are very refreshing. S/O to Summerbreeze!
Ryo Vibes ft. Andrew Bees - “Game Is Over”
dir. Edge Films
Follow me on this one. Ryo Vibes is a Japanese girl living in Los Angeles that raps in Japanese mixed with heavy Reggae influences. Yea, there’s a chance you’ve never seen or heard a combination like this before. All good. The world is huge, and this is proof. When I first heard of Ryo last year, I brushed her off for a bit (I see gimmicks everyday in my inbox, don’t judge me). Her other material is very dancehall based, but I believe this new track “Game Is Over” is a pretty accessible introduction for new audiences. At first, the Japanese-accented English lyrics on the intro chorus threw me off a little, but at around the 1:13 mark she kicks a crazy staccato flow and I was hooked. I’m anticipating how she’ll make an impact in the international music community with her distinct image and music in the future.
Shing02 - “愛密集 i miss you” + (Remix)
prod. Yakkle
Tokyo/San Francisco’s own Shing02 returns with the new single “愛密集 i miss you” produced by fellow Japanese producer Yakkle. This is straight silk. Two versions of the song were released: the very smooth and soulful original and a slightly more upbeat and jazzy remix version.

Japanese Jellyfish - KingoftheJellyfish
Midnight Kids Academy’s multifaceted Project Blowdian artist Tarikh Mizan assumes the alter-ego Japanese Jellyfish on his first full-length instrumental project, KingoftheJellyfish. Featuring off-kilter sampling selections and lo-fi drum programming ranging in all sorts of BPMs with plenty of vinyl crackle, KingoftheJellyfish exhibits a relentlessly unpredictable landscape of sound. Stream the album below and purchase for $3 if you’d like to support.
rMell x Miles Meraki - “Long Hair, Don’t Care”
The self-proclaimed Grammy Family hits us with a new banger “Long Hair, Don’t Care”. Fortunately, this isn’t about their own flowing locks, but the manes of dames. rMell especially gets busy on the first verse doing some borderline Bone Thugs flow. And holy Serato DJ’s Batman, there is a legit scratch outro. Definitely a keeper for your Summer playlist.

Gary Samurai - “Ocean Floor”
Atlanta-based artist Gary Samurai handles the songwriting, production and artwork on the first single “Ocean Floor” off his upcoming debut album Lemuria. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but the way the vocals are mixed makes Gary sound like he’s rapping underwater. This complements the Bomberman Hero OST-sampled beat very well, resulting in an appropriately aquatic and hypnotic track.
rMell - FRECKLES
B2P’s resident cool guy rMell aka the Freckled Fooligan returns with a new full length mixtape FRECKLES. As he is reserving heat for his highly anticipated upcoming album NEOGEO, FRECKLES is parts no holds-barred trollful indulgence and a statement of rMell’s artistic progression as this tape hits with a near-instantaneous appeal. His last project Hipsters & Hypebeast suffered from a lot of features that detracted from fully displaying his style. However on FRECKLES, listeners can get a better idea of rMell’s cartoony, cool, calm and collected demeanor as he keeps cameos limited only to fellow Grammy (Grandmothers Rarely Accommodate My Mans Yawmean) Family member Matt McGhee, Miles Meraki and Kool Klux Klan’s CRASHprez. Download this tape real quick and enjoy one of the DMV (and music in general)’s rising talents.

Corey G - “Monteith”
Los Angeles producer Corey G, while not simultaneously designing websites, graphics and producing a bunch of other artists’ tracks, is currently working on his upcoming MINT EP, set to drop next week. Here is the first single “Monteith”, which is nothing short of a wild ride. I wouldn’t be surprised if I heard emcees jump on this beat.
