Surp - God.
Backwards Society’s most enigmatic member, New York’s Surp God dropped his latest project God a few days ago. What is likely to be one of the year’s most unique and interesting projects of the year, God isn’t your traditional project. Surp only raps on about half the tracks on God, the rest of the tracks are instrumentals. But, in a somewhat eerie way, the project makes sense. In fact, I’d say that it wouldn’t have the same vibe if he rapped on all of the tracks, I actually liked it a lot this way. Definitely give God a listen, it’s sure to provoke your mind in some form or another.
GLC - The Anti Simp
Another one for the books by one of the most distinguished voices of Chicago Hip Hop, GLC. With his latest mixtape The Anti Simp, Gangsta Legendary Crisis takes on an LP’s worth of original production by folks such as Young Chop (Chief Keef - “I Don’t Like”), Jon Connor and even Brandun DeShay with his penchant for delivering soulful, slow-paced street/pimp knowledge over celebratory trap beats. While some of the material can get redundant throughout the listening experience, there is something that could easily be considered anthem material in almost every track. Download this project and respect the ISM!
Phony Ppl - Phonyland
LATE PASS PLEASE! Special thanks to the homie Oab Jenkins for recommending this project to us on twitter. Never too late for some great music though. Phony Ppl is an acclaimed hip hop/soul/jazz songwriting/production supergroup from Brooklyn, NY who are currently in the studio working on their upcoming Warner Bros. Records album with Plain Pat and Emile (Kanye West’s in-house team). Their debut project Phonyland (which dropped this past January) showcases all aspects of their talents including completely live instrumentation. Recorded at NYU, this project has the atmosphere of the hustle and bustle of New York City along with some very soulful and catchy melodies to keep the ride smooth. Definitely looking forward to what this crew can do with their new mainstream platform. Do yourself a favor and don’t sleep on this project like we did.
