Surp - God.
Backwards Society’s most enigmatic member, New York’s Surp God dropped his latest project God a few days ago. What is likely to be one of the year’s most unique and interesting projects of the year, God isn’t your traditional project. Surp only raps on about half the tracks on God, the rest of the tracks are instrumentals. But, in a somewhat eerie way, the project makes sense. In fact, I’d say that it wouldn’t have the same vibe if he rapped on all of the tracks, I actually liked it a lot this way. Definitely give God a listen, it’s sure to provoke your mind in some form or another.
dj honda ft. Mysonne - “All I Need Is Love”
dir. Mills Miller
This might be the most random collaboration ever, but it doesn’t sound too far fetched. Japan’s dj honda, well known for his collaboration with NY veteran Mos Def on “Travelin’ Man”, links with another NY emcee Mysonne on the dark but uplifting track “All I Need Is Love”. Hopefully this means there’s a new dj honda album coming soon.
Kilo Kish - “Navy”
dir. Kish Robinson & Ben Rayner
New self-directed music video by NY’s gentle-voiced Kilo Kish for the single “Navy” (prod. The Internet) off her recent project, the HomeSchool EP. Nothing much to the video except for some effective opacity between Kilo, her friends, a phone booth, outer space and the streets.
Noah Vinson - Warning Signs
dir. Jaison Blackrose
Acrylic Style’s own Noah Vinson goes OFF on this internet relationship narrative track that blends technical precision and actual substance on an overall catchy piece that you cannot help but bounce along to but also absorb some kind of quality/vivid message. Honestly, what more could you want from a rap song?
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire - Lost In Translation
This mixtape by El-P’s protege Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire has re-lit my personal enjoyment of NYC rap. Filled with low-fi beats from NY’s underground golden age (Necro, El-P, Cannibal Ox) and more, eXquire paints a picture both grimey and vulnerable with every track with a laid back but technically precise delivery. This, along with folks like ASAP Rocky and Action Bronson are definitely keeping my eyes on NY’s historically grand potential.
Label Activity: Acrylic Style Music Group
New York City indie label Acrylic Style Music Group has been dropping a lot of material lately and we just get overwhelmed by the amount of work sometimes, so I figured lets put all their tracks in one post. Get familiar with the East Coast upstarts by checking out all the music they’ve been releasing below:
